The Supreme Court and Affirmative Action

Yesterday, the Supreme Court ruled 6-2 in favor of upholding Michigan's ban on using race as a factor in the college admissions process at state schools. The decision is discussed in this article from the Wall Street Journal. Also included is the ABC World News video clip (2min.) from last night discussing the decision, Justice Sotomayor's fiery dissent, and the local impact on a college applicant.

Do you agree with the court's decision?
Should individual states be allowed to determine for themselves whether or not to racially profile college applicants?
How will this decision affect affirmative action in other states?

Characterization and Conflict

Jackie Robinson!

Every year, Major League Baseball sets aside one day in April to honor Jackie Robinson, the first Black baseball player to break the color barrier in 1949. He was an important part of the Civil Rights Movement, and I recently found this article on 538.com about how more modern statistical analysis proves that Robinson was one of the greatest second basemen of all time. I also have a man crush on the founder of 538.com, Nate Silver, who uses statistical analysis to predict political trends, elections, and he loves baseball!

We are being dismissed at 12 today, so we will not meet as a class. Thus:


  • We are not going to finish Gatsby this week. Review chapter 6 for a possible quiz tomorrow.
  • The last two presentations need to present tomorrow, so that we can wrap up the history of the 1920s.
  • There will be a Pageant Exam on Friday on Chapters 32-33. 
The Century: America's Time does a nice job of explaining the major events of each decade of the 20th Century in about 45 minutes. Here is the link to the episode on the 1920s. It may help you with some of the concepts that we covered.

Rest in Peace Sam.

This weekend, 17 year old Massachusetts native Sam Berns passed away. He had a very rare disease called progeria that makes you age incredibly fast. Here is the Ted talk that he did a couple of months ago about his philosophy of life.
