Race in America

Undoubtedly, the criminal court case of George Zimmerman was the most talked about case all summer and gained a tremendous amount of national attention. Zimmerman was on trial for the shooting death of 17 year old Trayvon Martin. Zimmerman admitted to shooting Martin, but said that he shot the young man in self defense. A jury had to decide whether or not Zimmerman acted in self defense or if Zimmerman shot and killed Martin in cold blood. Many people, including the media, speculated that race would have an impact on the proceedings because Zimmerman was a white/hispanic man, while Martin was an African American teenager. Read the following article from abc.com and respond to any of the following in a well written paragraph:

  • Are you upset or unsatisfied with the verdict?
  • Did race play a role in the decision?
  • What do you think of an all female jury?
  • Would the verdict have been different if Zimmerman were an African American man and Trayvon Martin were a 17 year old white teenager?
